Sand is synonymous with Lommel and a magnet for locals and tourists alike. ‘Lommel’s gold’ has even inspired the architects at A2O-Architecten and BuroLandschap. This fine example of architecture fits into the landscape and is a fitting place for a last farewell.
Statie Stuifduin Crematorium, located next to the city cemetery, appears to be a slumbering ruin amid Lommel’s dunes. The elongated complex comprises open, semi-open and closed spaces where visitors can take in nature and the landscape. The path taken by the mourners, allows for understanding of our life journey, from birth to death. Whereby the overwhelming beauty of nature is experienced as a comforting arm around the shoulders. In 2019, the project earned A2O-Architecten a nomination for the prestigious Mies van der Rohe Award.
Tip: reflect for a moment at Bistro Stuifduin. It’s a perfect spot for a delicious cup of coffee or piece of cake. This cosy bistro is open from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 17:00.
