THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF SOLDIERS
The largest European military cemetery for German soldiers of the Second World War (outside of Germany) lies in Lommel. It is situated in a carefully maintained park of 16 ha. (= almost 40 acres). 38 560 fallen German soldiers have found their last resting place here. For the graves heather was massively planted here after the Second World War.
During the flowering time this results in a purple shine over the graveyard. A building with visitors’ accommodation and information room, a monumental crypt and, on top of it, an immense statue in black lava rock form the entrance to the graveyard.
Nobody will fail to be moved when they walk past the endless rows of graves. So what is the story behind the German Military Cemetery? Who is buried here? Find out more during a guided tour or while geocaching.
